The Loft @ 73/1

ARCHALLEY by ARCHALLEY

in Projects, Refurbishment, Residential Architecture

  • Architects: Thimiru Abeysuriya – Chartered Architect
  • Location: Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka
  • Area: 750 ft2
  • Project Year: 2018
  • Contractor: B & G Construction
  • Photographer: D Squared Traveller – Architecture & Travel Photography

Situated in Mount Lavinia, a busy city in the suburban periphery of Colombo, this single bedroom ‘loft’ dwelling, on the third floor of an existing residence was a renovation from what was previously a store/workshop used by her (the owner’s) father.

Designed for the newly-wed daughter and her husband, the idea behind this composition was simply an ‘open-plan’ concept with a minimum of new wall constructions but, enlarging the existing available openings to ensure the limited available space still has its spacious quality yet with ample light and ventilation.

The ‘open-plan’ living dining space with a show kitchen/pantry opens out to a generous balcony enveloping the space, adorned with tropical ‘Bougainvillea’. The pantry has a bar-counter type table and chairs allowing the couple a dining space of their own and of course a space to entertain their guests.

A revamped characteristic timber staircase features a shadow play that animates the space over the course of the day which leads to a mezzanine level private bedroom which has a window; through which with clear sky during a few months of the year the Adam’s Peak becomes visible from a far distance.

‘A study’ is incorporated under the feature staircase in an elegant manner which has also helped to utilize the available space to a maximum.

The combination of contrasting ‘sleek & rustic’ finishes and the use of ‘black & white’ creates a ‘yin yang’ effect with opposite elements. The careful manipulation of all these elements work together in perfect harmony. This, along with careful selection of furniture personalized for the couple help to create a contemporary character without compromising on a cozy, romantic ambience, perfect for two.
