COMPETITION OVERVIEW
“Tree without a Tree”
is a competition designed to explore alternative solutions for traditional methods of building Christmas trees, beyond the conventional approach.
This Christmas season, we are embracing
“The spirit of giving”
by expressing our love and concern for the environment, with an attempt to
protect natural trees & reduce waste after use,
ensuring a joyful and eco-friendly celebration.

TRAGEDY OF PINE TREE HARVESTING
120 million trees are cut down every Christmas across the world, leading to large-scale deforestation and CO2 release. An average 2 meter natural Christmas tree produces a carbon footprint of around 16kg of CO2.
Rotting Christmas trees give off 100,000 tons of toxic gases. This is because the trees decompose and produce methane gas, which is 25 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
WASTE OVERFLOW
3 million tones of average extra waste generated over the Christmas period each year, including artificial Christmas trees, artificial Christmas decorations, extra food, etc.
based on January rubbish and recycling collections.
The production of one artificial Christmas tree results in about 88 pounds of carbon dioxide.

Archalley will award a total of LKR 325,000.00 in prize money to competition winners as follows:

“The Green Gaze” is a personalized two-story residence in Moragoda, Gampaha, designed for a marine engineer seeking solace in nature. Spanning 4,115 sqft, the home seamlessly integrates with its lush surroundings and panoramic paddy field views. Expansive glass openings flood the living spaces with natural light, connecting the indoors with the outdoor pool and greenery. Strategically positioned living and dining areas on both floors enhance the immersive experience. Thoughtful landscaping further amplifies tranquility, making the home a sanctuary that nurtures relaxation and family bonding in harmony with nature.

Portable Landscape for Dhaka Stock Exchange Tower

Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh
Project Year: 2020
Dhaka Stock Exchange, located in Nikunja, Dhaka is one of the major stock exchanges in Bangladesh. The Dhaka Stock Exchange tower is located beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. That building had a huge mass with no green on site. Nowadays, almost all corporate houses are designed in a very specific way in Bangladesh where the landscape is ignored. Dhaka Stock Exchange Tower is the next head office of the stock exchange. Sometimes, designers and stakeholders almost forget to put a small green on the premises. There are so many stockholders, companies, broker houses, etc. These premises were surveyed and found almost zero green on site. MSH Atelier is being hired by the Dhaka Stock exchange authority to redevelop the building profile and landscape of the DSE Tower.

A family-friendly boutique villa nestled in the lush tropics of Udawalawe, Sri Lanka where the essence of tranquility meets contemporary comfort, overlooking a beautiful waterway and wrapped by a cluster of Jack trees, draws inspiration from the jack fruit that symbolizes abundance and rejuvenation. The charming boutique villa comprises a semi-open restaurant with an infinity swimming pool, 06 deluxe rooms, 04 family rooms, 02 large suite rooms, and an ayurvedic spa with an entrance building all are crafted with eco-consciousness in mind. Each building features a unique design that blends the hues of nature with elements inspired by the jackfruit, capturing the tropical ambiance of the surrounding environment.

After years of struggle Sri Lanka was embracing decolonization after gaining independence from British rule during the mid-20th century. This was reflected in many aspects of daily life and Architecture and built environment was also in a phase of reviving and rejuvenating of traditional identities. Minette De Silva was one architect who played a significant role in Sri Lankan Architecture during this period.

The site is a 19 perch land located in a residential suburb of Colombo. Despite its vicinity to green paddy fields; three sides of the site were contained by two storied houses and the access road was on the west face.
This was to become the home for a young family with working parents; both the owners drive to Colombo for work from their home at Malabe; and from the onset they wanted an extent of privacy that would still allow them to enjoy the outdoors. The site offered no direction to open the house out to yet its shape and size lent itself to the idea of a courtyard house.
